‘It’s not crocs, It’s timeless, It’s Lindy’ (Pt. I + II) is a film and hybrid image-lecture-performance that took place in Catford, London in 2022.

The project featured a talk by Ben Burbridge, Co-Director of the Centre for Photography and Visual Culture at the University of Sussex and author of ‘Photography After Capitalism’ (2020, Goldsmiths Press / MIT Press). It centers around speculative futures and collaborative learning models. In a collaborative attempt to oppose current models of privatised, deregulated Higher Education in the UK the goal of the project is to use the collaborative act of image making to facilitate an accessible space of knowledge creation - a space that contemporary universities, driven by neoliberal agendas and profit margins, increasingly fail to establish. Following current closures of humanitarian and social science courses and growing redundancies of academic staff at Goldsmiths, University of London - where the participating five artists met - it is also thought to establish a direct supportive solution for striking staff and affected students. An empty ‘Peacocks’ department store in Catford, London, closed during the pandemic due to lack of profit, is the setting for the realisation of the project. At a time where institutional models are being challenged across the country, current industrial strike actions brought about by educators and staff have allowed a platform for a collective reimagining of what the possibility of education may look like in future.

This project was supported using public funding from Arts Council England, the European Regional Development Fund and Lewisham Council. In partnership with the artist collective Futures_After.
